When it comes to travel blogging and photography…the right outfit can make or break a photo. There are so many factors to consider when choosing an outfit for your travel photos: lighting, backdrop, season, perspective and more. As both a travel micro-influencer and blogger, my favorite way to add color and interest to my travel photos is through the outfits I choose. Usually, that means something colorful and flattering, with a swishy skirt to throw around! Keep reading for the best travel skirts and dresses for travel bloggers.

Why the Outfit Matters

Before getting into the best travel skirts and dresses for bloggers, I want to show you an example of how much an outfit choice can effect travel photography. I’m going to show you one of my old travel photos from study abroad, and then I’ll show you a photo I took on my recent trip to Copan Ruinas. Note the difference.

I took this photo in 2017 on my first trip to Paris. Aside from the abysmal editing and iPhone 7 shot quality, the outfit I chose does absolutely nothing to make the photo more appealing. It was a dreary, overcast day in Paris and all my outfit choice does is accentuate the unfortunate weather.

This photo, on the other hand, I took in October of 2021 in the main square of Copan Ruinas, Honduras. Removing the higher quality camera and beautiful, sunny day from the equation, do you see how my outfit choice accentuates the beauty of the destination and creates more visual interest? This photo would never have had the same effect had I been wearing leggings and a sweatshirt.

The Best Travel Skirts and Dresses

    Lovestitch Clothing

Lovestitch is one of my favorite clothing brands for travel photos because their chic and unique styles are made only with dependable and quality materials. Based out of California, Lovestitch pieces give off the perfect carefree and bohemian vibe that I seek to express through my travel photography. Their items are comfortable, flattering and, most of the time, lightweight so they won’t take up much of your valuable suitcase space.

I’ve been loving the Wavelength Tiered Maxi Dress for travel shots and the Tokyo Weekender bag for a quick trip.

    Lulus

I’ve been a loyal Lulus customer since I was a wee college freshman attending my first sorority formal. The fashionable and sophisticated styles always stand out in photos and are affordable for any traveler. Lulus has a wide variety of styles ranging from casual wear to dresses fit for bridesmaids.

For my upcoming move to Thailand, I’m particularly loving this off-the-shoulder maxi dress, this pink floral maxi and this sage, button-front maxi. This mint satin maxi and this red pleated dress with tiers are also on my wishlist!

When it comes to the best travel skirts from Lulus, check out this floral midi skirt and this simple, black travel skirt.

    Red Dress

I actually just treated myself to a new blue maxi dress from Red Dress last month! Although the off-the-shoulder number I purchased is now sold out, I’m adding this yellow floral print midi to my wishlist ASAP. It’s the perfect length and style for visiting temples in Thailand! (Women are expected to cover their shoulders and knees when visiting religious monuments).

I’m also toying with the idea of purchasing this brown and cream print maxi dress and this elegant, white midi skirt! For winter, Red Dress has tons of great pants, jackets and sweater options that are insanely affordable considering the quality.

    Free People

I’ve always loved the Free People brand! It’s the perfect brand for travelers because their bohemian clothes are suited for free spirits and adventurers. Although their pieces come at a higher price point, they are made with high quality materials and tend to last a long time in your wardrobe.

This skirt is one of my all-time favorite travel skirts because it’s also a travel dress! It comes in a variety of colors and is the perfect piece of travel clothing because it’s essentially two outfits in one. Some other great options for your travel wardrobe are this beach bliss maxi dress, this a little extra maxi and this waterlily maxi dress!

    Tiare Hawaii

Although it’s sadly out of my price range (hint hint pls sponsor me Tiare Hawaii 😂), Tiare Hawaii is the holy grail when it comes to Insta-worthy travel dresses. Their ethereal and dreamy styles are perfect for capturing the perfect shot in any destination. The brand partners with top Instagram travel influencers like @travelwithtalia, @helloomelissa and @bambi.thalia.

Tiare Hawaii is known for their off-the-shoulder maxi skirts and dresses as well as their two-piece sets. I’m currently obsessed with the Hollie maxi dress.

    R. Vivimos on Amazon

The Amazon brand, R.Vivimos, is the perfect place to shop dreamy travel looks for a fraction of the price of the big brands. For example, I just purchased this adorable backless maxi from R. Vivimos for only $32. Tiare Hawaii sells the same dress (in different colors) for $128 and, from Free People, it sells for $118.

I purchased my all-time favorite travel dress from R. Vivimos before I moved to Roatán (pictured below)! Unfortunately, my dress has been out of stock for quite some time. Thankfully, they offer similar options like this short sleeved bohemian maxi and this maxi wrap dress. I’m also loving this deep V halter mini dress (Shein sells a similar version) and this sleeveless button up maxi dress!

    Petal & Pup

Petal & Pup is the embodiment of sophistication with their unique and ladylike styles. The dress pictured below, was the first item I had ever purchased from the brand and I was very impressed with the quality. The midi length skirt has lots of extra fabric so it’s perfect for skirt-flip travel photos!

For my upcoming trip to Morocco, I’m thinking of purchasing the Petal & Pup Barker Dress in hot pink. The color will be sure to stand out with a dusty sand background or in the blue city of Chefchaouen. I’m also loving this blush maxi dress and their classic Oralie Dress for special occasions. This pleated skirt is one of the best travel skirts I’ve come across, since it’s lightweight, swishy and colorful!

    Hello Molly

Similar in styles and pricing to Petal & Pup, Hello Molly is another great brand for Insta-worthy travel clothes. They sell some of the best travel skirts and dresses to stand out in photographs in any destination! The dress pictured below, the Stop Motion Maxi Dress in mocha, is one of their most popular items and one of my favorite dresses to shoot in.

This strapless floral number is one of my current favorites, as well as this high-slit floral dress and this green matching set with a strapless crop top and maxi skirt.

    Shein

Shein, along with Zaful, is one of the most affordable online shops for travel-loving women. They put out hundreds of new women’s styles daily, so there’s guaranteed to be something for everyone. Shein’s prices can be shockingly low, so don’t expect the quality to knock you out of the park. To their credit, most of their items are better quality than you would expect for the price.

Although I love Shein’s collection of skirts and dresses, I mainly shop with them for their swimwear. You can find bikini sets for as low as $8 and, although you get what you pay for, their suits usually hold up for at least a couple years! I’m loving this 3-piece floral bikini set with a matching cover up as well as this half-black half-leopard print one piece. The ties across the waist make it a flattering swimsuit for any body type.

When it comes to the best travel skirts and dresses on Shein, I always love sundresses like this backless floral print mini dress and this long-sleeved cutout mini. For my trip to Thailand, I purchased the two piece set below. If you’re looking for something for the winter season, don’t miss this emerald lantern sleeve dress.

    Tobi

Like Lulus, I’ve been a long-time customer of Tobi since my college days. They sell tons of chic styles perfect for a sorority formal or awesome travel photos. I’m especially loving their holiday collection on sale for Cyber Monday like this red tulle maxi dress.

I especially love shopping for travel clothes from Tobi because they have a wide variety of dresses and skirts that are perfect for skirt-flip travel photos (like the dress pictured below). They also sell a nice range of casual outfits vs. fancy dresses and options fit for a wedding. You’ll find a lot of their summer options on sale like this ombre maxi dress and this satin midi.

    Morning Lavender

I love Morning Lavender for their casual, yet ethereal, dresses that make you feel like you stepped out of a fairytale! Affordable options like this long-sleeved floral maxi, will make you feel like Cinderella…and get beautiful photos to match.

All styles are on super sale for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so head to the Morning Lavender site ASAP! My personal favorites are this off-the shoulder maxi in white, this romantic floral maxi and this tiered midi skirt!

    KTR Collection

Although it’s one of my priciest recommendations on this list, KTR collection sells some of the best travel skirts and dresses money can buy! If you’re in the market for the perfect dress for a “flying dress” photo shoot, this is the brand for you.

A lot of KTR’s styles are actually made-to-order, so you never have to worry about an incorrect fit or inconvenient return. The website will just ask you to fill in your upper bust, bust size, waist, maximum length and the date you need it by and voila! Your perfect travel dress is on its way!

This gorgeous Maldives Flying Maxi Dress is one of my favorites in the current collection. I can just imagine wearing this in the Moroccan dessert…the photos would be Conde Nast worthy. I also love their classic Tulum Maxi Dress and the more subtle Sunrise Maxi Halter.

    Shore Brand

I found out about Shore back in 2019 from a friend who used to work for the brand. Although the styles are definitely on the pricier side, they’re completely unique to Shore and are perfect for travel photos in any destination! I especially love their co-ords.
