5 Steps to Attending the Halloween Party in Dracula’s Castle
For Halloween in 2024, we decided to do something truly unforgettable—a trip to Romania centered around the world-famous Halloween party in Dracula’s Castle.
Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, Bran Castle is legendary, not just for its haunting beauty but also for inspiring Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Combining its eerie history with a Halloween party sounded like the ultimate bucket-list experience, and we couldn’t resist.
We planned our trip to build up to this magical night. Starting in Bucharest, we worked our way through the charming towns of Sibiu and Brașov, making Brașov our home base for the Halloween festivities, before heading back to Bucharest to fly home.
The idea of partying at Dracula’s Castle sounded thrilling, but I’ll admit—we worried it might be overhyped. Thankfully, we were completely wrong. The night was electrifying, filled with fantastic costumes, great music, and impeccable vibes I’ll never forget.
If you’ve ever dreamed of celebrating Halloween in a castle steeped in myth and mystery, Dracula’s Castle is the perfect destination. Transylvania may still be an underrated part of Europe, but with some planning, this trip can be the Halloween experience of a lifetime.
Here’s everything you need to know to make it happen!
SOLO FEMALE TRAVEL RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Romania is a fantastic destination for solo female travelers—I’d give it 5 stars, easily. However, I don’t typically recommend attending massive drinking festivals as a solo female traveler, just due to the safety aspect. That doesn’t mean you can’t—just make sure to be extra aware and always have your wits about you.
Step 1: Get Ahead of Planning
When it comes to attending the Halloween party in Dracula’s Castle, it’s best to start planning early. Tickets and accommodations can sell out fast, especially as the event gains popularity. Getting a head start will ensure you don’t have to make compromises and can enjoy the full experience stress-free.
We started planning for the Bran Castle Halloween Party 2024 around the end of August, but you could probably start as late as mid-September.
Get the Dates Right
One of the most important steps in planning for Halloween in Dracula’s Castle is getting the date right—something we learned the hard way.
We just assumed the party would be on Halloween night, but in reality, it’s always held on the Saturday of Halloween week. In 2024, that meant Saturday, November 2nd.
Unfortunately, we realized our mistake 36 hours after booking our plane tickets, which originally had us flying out of Bucharest early on Sunday morning. To save us from the impossible scenario of driving through the night to Bucharest directly after the Halloween party…I had to eat the $300 flight change fee to leave on Monday morning instead.
It was an expensive lesson, but one worth sharing—double-check the date before booking anything!
Nail Down an Itinerary
If you’re making the journey to Romania for the Halloween party in Dracula’s Castle, it’s worth exploring more of the country while you’re there! Since flying into Bucharest International Airport (OTP) is the easiest option when coming from the States, we started our trip with three amazing days in Bucharest.
From there, we headed to Transylvania and spent 24 hours exploring Sibiu and getting watched by the houses with eyes, before continuing on to Brasov—which served as our home base for the Halloween party.
We made sure to spend a couple of days in Brașov before the big event, soaking up the city’s fascinating history and beautiful nearby attractions. We headed back to Bucharest the morning after the Halloween party, but we stopped and visited Peles Castle in Sinaia on the way!
If you plan on attending the Halloween party in Bran Castle, then I highly recommend building out a longer itinerary in Romania. Plane tickets to Europe aren’t cheap (especially now), and there’s a lot worth exploring in this country besides insanely affordable cocktails in a heated party tent.
Book your Tickets in Advance
We booked our Bran Castle tickets for the Halloween party at Dracula’s Castle in early September, which turned out to be a smart move. While I don’t think you need to book quite that early, tickets do sell out—fast.
While in Brașov, we chatted with some travelers who wanted to attend last minute, only to find out it was already too late. To avoid some serious disappointment, I recommend booking your tickets as soon as you lock in your flights.
The best place to get your tickets is directly on the official website. Bran Castle offers a few different ticket packages to choose from. We opted for the Halloween Combo Ticket for 400 LEI (84 USD), which includes the Halloween Special Tour (just a Bran Castle tour that’s been all Halloween’d-up) and the Halloween Party.
They also offer The Count Special Guest Ticket for 1,200 LEI (250 USD) which includes all of the above plus a 4-course dinner at Queen Mary’s Tea House. We considered this, but $166 is atrociously expensive for a dinner in Romania, and we heard it was not that great anyway. Save your money for booze at the party instead!
Lastly, you could splurge on The Ultimate Experience for 2,000 LEI (420 USD), which includes a finger food buffet, open bar, DJ set, and access to all three floors of the caste.
Now, let me keep it real with you: there are plenty of tour operators out there offering full-service Halloween packages to Bran Castle. But—I’m not going to recommend something to you just to make a commission. In my opinion, there’s no reason you can’t plan this trip on your own. It was fairly straightforward, and I’ll equip you with everything you need to make it happen—no pricey tour operator necessary!
Step 2: Pick Your Costume
If there’s one thing you don’t want to skimp on for the Halloween party at Dracula’s Castle, it’s a killer costume.
People go all out for this event, with elaborate, creative, and downright spooky outfits filling the dance floor. Plan your costume well in advance to make sure you pass the vibe check!
Halloween Costume Inspiration
I’ve never been one to go all out for Halloween, but this year was different—flying across the world to spend Halloween in Romania seemed like the perfect excuse. I decided to splurge on a custom-made Selena costume from avenueBLUEdesigns on Etsy, and I absolutely loved how it turned out!
My friends didn’t hold back either. Two of them dressed as vampires (perfectly fitting for the setting), and another went as Cleopatra, complete with tons of stunning gold jewelry.
If you’re looking for costume inspiration, here are some of the most creative and memorable costumes I spotted at the event (I’m biased so I had to include my own):
Step 3: Book Your Accommodation
When planning your trip to the Halloween party at Dracula’s Castle, you’ll likely choose between staying in Brașov or Bran.
We decided to stay in Brașov, even though it’s about a 30-minute drive from Bran Castle, because there’s so much more to do there. We wanted a few days to explore the area and enjoy Brașov’s lively atmosphere, charming Old Town, and great restaurants serving all the typical Romanian delicacies.
That said, Bran is a fantastic choice if you prefer staying closer to the action. Bran Castle is located right in this quaint little town, and some accommodations are even within walking distance. Just keep in mind that Bran is much smaller—home to only about 1,500 people compared to Brașov’s 240,000—so it’s quieter and more limited in activities.
Where to Stay in Brasov
- (Budget-Friendly)📍 SECRET Boutique Hostel: Nestled in the heart of Brașov’s historic Old Town, this affordable hostel offers a cozy, social atmosphere that’s perfect for both solo and budget travelers.
- (Mid-Range)📍Grandview City Brasov: During our trip, we stayed at Grandview City Brașov, and it was hands down the best accommodation we booked in Romania. The apartment had two amazing balconies, three spacious bedrooms, and was impeccably clean—an absolute steal for the price! (Pictured below.)
- (Luxury)📍Radisson Blu Aurum Hotel: Located near the medieval Old Town, this luxury hotel features elegant rooms, a rooftop pool, and two on-site restaurants—offering a top-tier experience for guests.
Where to Stay In Bran
- (Budget-Friendly)📍 Bran Chalet: Offering amazing views of the surrounding mountains, Bran Chalet is a cozy, budget-friendly option (with prices as low as €60/night) just 300 meters from Bran Castle.
- (Mid-Range)📍Casa Din Bran: This charming guesthouse is located only a 6-minute walk from Bran Castle and offers spacious views, modern amenities, and beautiful views of the surrounding hills.
- (Luxury)📍Conacul Törzburg: If you’re looking for a luxurious option with a perfect view of Bran Castle, Conacul Törzburg is the perfect accommodation option for you. Guests will enjoy an on-site restaurant and bar, a delicious breakfast, and free parking.
Step 4: Visit the Castle During the Day
If you’re heading to Bran Castle for the Halloween party, I highly recommend visiting the castle during the day as well. The sun sets in Romania around 5:00 PM in the fall, so by the time you arrive for the party, it’ll be pitch-black.
We decided to stop by the castle the day before in order to take pictures in front of the castle and appreciate it in the daylight.
Take Photos in Front of the Castle
For the best photos of Bran Castle, head to Park View Bran Castle, an appropriately named nearby park that offers beautiful views of the castle in the background (pictured below).
There’s also a short, 5-minute hike from the park to a scenic viewpoint with stunning panoramic views of the castle. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to make the hike since we weren’t wearing the right shoes, but it’s definitely worth planning for if you’re better prepared!
The viewpoint is marked by a wooden cross on top of the hill and offers stunning panoramic views of Bran Castle and the town below.
Take the Tour
The Halloween Combo ticket includes a tour of the castle, so we decided to skip a daytime visit and only tour the castle the night of the party—but I wish we hadn’t.
The nighttime tour was rushed, dark, and full of drunk partygoers. While it was fun to see the castle decked out in Halloween decorations, we were ushered through too quickly to read about the history or truly appreciate what we were seeing.
My advice? Visit the castle the day before to take your time, soak in the history, and enjoy the experience at your own pace. Then, skip the tour on the night of the party and just show up whenever you feel like—you’ll only need to get there early if you want to join the tour line.
You can purchase your tickets on the official Bran Castle website and they cost 70 LEI per ticket (15 USD).
Note: Entrance for the tour included in your Halloween Combo Ticket starts at 9:00 AM the day of the party (with last entry at 10:00 PM). If you stop by earlier in the day to take the tour, you won’t be rushed and you don’t have to pay twice—it’s the best of both worlds.
Step 5: Know Before You Go
Attending the Halloween party in Dracula’s Castle is an unforgettable experience, but since there’s little information online, planning out the logistics can be tricky.
Don’t worry—that’s why I’m sharing all the insider info you need to make sure your night at Bran Castle goes off without a hitch.
Free Coat Check
There’s no need to freeze your ass off in line since the Halloween party offers a free coat check! Bring your coziest jacket to stay bundled up in line—just don’t lose your ticket.
Where is the Party Held?
While it would be incredible to party inside Dracula’s Castle, the space is simply too small to host such a large event. Instead, the Halloween party takes place in a heated tent on the castle grounds, offering plenty of room for dancing and mingling.
Be aware that there isn’t indoor plumbing near the party area, though you can use the bathrooms inside the castle during the tour. Otherwise, there are plenty of porta potties stationed near the party entrance.
Don’t worry—they’re actually decently clean…at least at the beginning of the night.
When Should You Show Up?
We agonized over this decision on the night of the party because we’d heard from multiple sources that the line to get in could stretch for hours. Unfortunately, no one could give us a definitive answer on the best time to arrive.
In the end, we decided to show up at 9:00 PM. We waited in line for about 30 minutes, and since it wasn’t too cold, the wait wasn’t bad.
After taking the tour, we headed to the party around 10:00 PM, which was already in full swing. That said, just because we got lucky doesn’t mean the line will always be that manageable. If you want to play it super safe, showing up earlier is your best bet!
Transportation Tips
Transportation logistics depend on where you’re staying. If you’re staying in Bran, you’re all set—just walk to the castle! For those staying in Brașov, transportation is going to require a little more finesse.
If you booked your tickets through a tour operator, round-trip transportation from Brașov is typically included in the price. (Don’t buy third-party tickets that don’t include transportation—that’s kind of the whole point of going through a tour operator.)
Since we decided to DIY the entire night, we booked Ubers to and from Brașov to Bran Castle. They arrived quickly and cost around $30 USD each way, which is pretty reasonable for a 30-minute drive.
I highly recommend this route for the party—it’s convenient, and you can arrive and leave whenever you feel like.
The Castle Tour
As I mentioned earlier, the castle tour included with the Halloween Combo ticket was rushed, crowded, and dark—making it hard to really appreciate the history or learn much about Bran Castle.
That said, the castle was beautifully decked out for Halloween, complete with actors in spooky costumes and rooms decorated to match the holiday. It added a festive and eerie touch to the experience that you won’t find at any other time of year.
There’s also a special show in the Time Tunnel—for an extra 50 LEI!
Bran Castle itself is a fascinating place to explore, even beyond the Halloween festivities. (If you’re looking for the cliff notes version of Bran Castle’s history, we’ll get to it in a later section.)
Whether you decide to tour the castle during the day or at night, a castle tour cannot be missed when spending Halloween at Bran Castle.
What Should You Bring to the Halloween Party in Dracula’s Castle?
You don’t need to bring much for the Halloween Party in Dracula’s Castle. I brought a coat, a small pair of gloves, and (I won’t lie) a water bottle filled with white wine for the line.
Other than that, just bring your awesome costumes and great vibes—they’ve got everything else covered!
Safety Tips
Huge international parties are no joke when it comes to safety. You can trust me—I’ve been to Oktoberfest four times on trips to Munich.
Before getting your drink on at one of the biggest Halloween parties in Europe, follow these simple rules to make sure you stay safe and have the best time.
- Eat before!! Seriously, don’t show up to this Halloween party with a belly full of salad or Pringles. Eat something of substance before drinking all night.
- Charge your phone and pack a portable charger. Especially if you’re staying in Brasov, you need to be able to call an Uber home.
- Use the buddy system! If you’re attending with friends, make sure to share your locations on Find My Phone in case you get separated.
- Always keep an eye on your drink and never set it down or leave it unattended.
- Bring a purse that zips and keep an eye on it. Nothing can ruin your night like getting pickpocketed.
- Above all—stay alert. If you can’t handle a lot of liquor, make sure to keep your drinking under control. This is a party and it’s supposed to be fun, but it’s also an international event with lots of drunk strangers. Prioritize your safety above all!
DIY vs. Booking a Tour
The main advantage of booking a guided tour is having your transportation arranged for you, which can save some hassle if you’re staying in Brașov.
Some guided tour options also advertise “skip-the-line” access and welcome drinks, but I’d recommend checking reviews carefully. Many tours don’t seem to deliver on the “skip-the-line” promise, and drinks are so reasonably priced at the party that it’s not worth paying for a guided tour just to snag a couple of free ones—the hefty price tag more than covers those extras.
Since Halloween just ended in 2024, there aren’t many guided tour options available online for next year yet. Keep an eye out around summer 2025 when more options will start popping up, and I’ll update this post with recommendations for you!
That said, my personal opinion is that DIY is the best way to experience the Bran Castle Halloween party. You’ll have the flexibility to plan your own transportation, arrive when you want, and save money without sacrificing any of the fun.
The History of Bran Castle
Bran Castle itself is a fascinating place to explore, even beyond the Halloween festivities.
Built in the 14th century, it served as a fortress to defend against Ottoman invasions and later became a royal residence. Although there’s no concrete evidence linking Vlad the Impaler to Bran Castle, its dramatic architecture and location is what inspired Bram Stoker to write his world-famous novel—Dracula.
Bran Castle has a long and storied history that dates back centuries, blending fact, legend, and myth. For the history buffs—here’s a rough historical timeline of the castle:
- 1212: The first documented fortress on the site was constructed by the Teutonic Knights but was destroyed shortly thereafter.
- 1388: Construction of the current Bran Castle was completed after the Hungarian King Louis I granted the Saxons of Kronstadt (Brașov) permission to build it as a fortress to defend against Ottoman invasions.
- 1459: Vlad the Impaler, the infamous ruler of Wallachia and inspiration for Count Dracula, may have passed through Bran Castle, though there’s no solid evidence to prove this.
- 1920: The castle transitioned into a royal residence after it was gifted to Queen Marie of Romania, who restored it and made it a summer retreat. After Queen Marie died in 1938, the castle passed to Princess Ileana, who was married to the Archduke of Austria.
- 1948-1956: After the war, Princess Ileana and her family were forced into exile under the new communist regime, and the castle became a museum under communist rule.
- 1990s-Present: Following the fall of communism, Bran Castle was returned to the descendants of the Romanian royal family. Today, it operates as a museum and is one of Romania’s most popular tourist destinations.
